Description
By H. Dwight Weaver
In Volume 2 of History and Geography of Lake of the Ozarks Dwight Weaver continues his quest to document the fascinating history of Missouri’s oldest and largest recreational area in the northern Ozarks. The result is a collection of narratives that restore fond memories of earlier times when roadside attractions and lakeside resorts were small, the Lake area was a quite retreat, and the big city felt far way. Here too are stories with details about people, places and events that even long-time residents of the region have probably forgotten or may never have known.
Among the book’s highlights are narratives on the early history of the Bagnell Dam Strip and the cities of Osage Beach and Laurie, as well as the early villages of Proctor and Duroc. From legend to fact, the story of the dramatic filming of a scene in the 1938 Twentieth Century Fox movie “Jesse James”, in which horses and men leaped from a bluff into the Lake along Shawnee Bend, tells early 20th century swinging bridge builder of the Osage River Valley; and of Dr. Guss Salley upon whose tombstone are carved the words “Magician, Physician, Politician”.
More than 250 photos, maps, and other illustrations bring this volume of the series to life in a very special and memorable way.
